NFTs have opened up a world for digital artists that allows their works to be bought, owned, traded and collected through digital marketplaces.
NFTs have made headlines recently, allowing digital art and others such as drawings or music to be sold online. An NFT is a unique digital token which effectively verifies authenticity and ownership. It is encrypted with the artist’s signature on the blockchain, a digital ledger used in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.
We previously introduced an example of how NFTs can be used for real estates. But, did you know? Case of selling virtual space 3D buildings also exists as well!
Toronto-based artist Krista Kim has sold an entirely virtual home, Mars House, the world’s first digital NFT (non-fungible token) home, for $500,000 on the blockchain.
Kim designed the Mars House in 2020 to be a space that embodied her philosophy of meditative design. She worked with an architect to render the house using Unreal Engine, software that is commonly used to create video games. Mars House, designed to be a “light sculpture”, overlooks a moody mountain range and features an open-plan design and floor to ceiling glass walls.
The digital home, Mars House, can be experienced in virtual reality and could also be overlaid onto the real world to create an augmented reality (AR) environment in apps such as SuperWorld in the near future.
The buyer of Mars House will be sent a digital 3D file, which can be used to upload to his or her “Metaverse.”
